November 30th  update

This week began with the old rear dormer being opened up and the rafters removed to the side walls to make space for a new, double dormer. Framing
that and getting the roof closed back up took the better part of the week.
Meanwhile the stucco work on the chimneys began and, during a
momentary lull, the new shower stall for the attic bathroom was lifted
first to the roof of the addition, then to the second floor roof, and finally
into the attic through the dormer opening. It would not, of course,
fit up the attic stairs so this was the one chance to get it in place.

First the old dormer had to be removed
and rafters taken out to make space
for the new double dormer.

Laying our the new dormer was challenging. Getting
enough space for the windows, head room over the
stairs, an adequate slope on the roof,  and keeping the
look similar to the other dormers... all of these things
had our crew doing serious mathematics.

Here the new dormer begins to take shape. You can also see the chimney, formed up but without any stucco at this point.

From the inside of the new dormer, the rafters are now in place.

And here the plywood sheathing begins to go on as our
stucco artists begin to prep the chimneys.

But before the siding could go on the dormer
the attic shower stall had to be taken up. The stairs to the attic are far too small for it
to be taken up through the house.

The chimneys were carefully prepared
for the stucco. First a "scratch layer" which is fairly thick was put on.  Then two finish coats were applied.

The stucco was mixed on site. A balky gas engine made
the process a bit more challenging.

Not quite finished but you begin to be able to
see how the chimneys will look behind
the original front dormers.
